My Battle With Stress, Anxiety And Depression

Stress, depression and anxiety are the modern day plagues and if you’re suffering from them, then I know how you feel because I've suffered from stress and depression for almost 5 years. I was in the army when I was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) which is a form of depression and anxiety.

My condition had actually surfaced mildly during my studies' period when I was giving myself tremendous stress, but it was during my army days that my depression became full-bloomed! I was basically put through a terrible ordeal which was like a living nightmare! I was given anti-depressant pills and injections to stop my anxiety and depression for almost 5 years. The side effects of these medications basically turned me into a "walking zombie". I felt weak and drowsy almost every day. From feeling helpless, lonely and isolated to the crushing exhaustion that makes even the most simple of tasks so very hard, these problems create a living nightmare to me.

Stress - What Exactly Is Stress?

Stress refers to the strain and tension that are built up in your body system as time goes by. It arises from the conflict between our external environment and ourselves which leads to emotional and physical pressure. Modern way of living is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands. For many of us, stress is a common issue that it has become a part and parcel of life. Nevertheless, stress isn't always bad. In small doses, stress can assist us in performing under pressure and give us motivation to do our best. However, if you are always constantly running in emergency mode, your mind and body will have to pay the price.

When the stresses start to undermine both of our mental and physical health, they are bad. The individual will experience symptoms such as tensions, headaches, irritability and in extreme cases, heart palpitations. People under large amounts of stress can become tired, sick, and unable to concentrate or think clearly. At its worse, they even suffer mental breakdowns which lead to severe depression.

How do you know you're stressed?
Here are the major signs and symptoms of stress overload:


  • Blood pressure rises
  • Breathing becomes more rapid
  • Digestive system slows down
  • Heart rate (pulse) rises
  • Immune system goes down
  • Muscles become tense
  • We do not sleep (heightened state of alertness), insomnia
  • Waking up too early in the morning
  • Tension headache
  • Tightness in the face, nose bridge and head
  • Feeling hot
  • Always feeling tired and restless

The signs and symptoms of stress overload can be almost anything. Stress affects the mind, body, and behavior in many ways, and everyone experiences stress differently.

Your body doesn't distinguish between what is the right way or wrong way to react to any things, threats, tasks or workloads. Whether you are stressed over a busy schedule, an argument with a friend, a traffic jam, or a mountain of bills, your body simply reacts just as strongly as if you were facing a life-or-death situation. If you are always under a lot of responsibilities and worries, your emergency stress response may be turned "on" most of the time. The more your body’s stress system is activated, the easier it is to trip and the harder it is to shut off.

There are many different causes of stress, and that which causes stress is also known as a stressor. A stressor is something which creates or increases stress, and there are different varieties of factors that cause stress. The above lists are some of the common causes of stress which will lead you to depression and other mental illnesses.

Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems. Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can bring terrible havoc to your entire body system. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.

Hence, we need to understand and acknowledge stress and learn how to cope with life challenges and changes. Everyone has the potential to suffer from stress which will lead to anxiety disorder and depression. It is just a matter of a catalyst or a trigger from any life events that will cause a person from being totally normal to explode into severe stress, anxiety and depression.
